Karl McCoy was a gifted receiver – a 6-7 high jumper who led Staten Island in receptions as a sophomore and senior at Port Richmond High School, and doubled as a running back his junior year – and an even better defensive back.
In a truncated career at Penn State, McCoy lettered as a freshman, and started the next year. He had five interceptions, two against undefeated Maryland in the game that vaulted the Nittany Lions to a No. 1 ranking for the first time in school history. He was named to the Staten Island Advance All-Century team.
